There was mention several times about black churches in around America being burned. If the characters had all been white, it could have been exactly the same tale. Although Marley and her family are black, there doesn't seem to be anything at all about the black experience in the book. Side note: I did find it odd that it won the Coretta Scott King award. She has a difficult time coming to terms with this new reality. And her parents are actually her aunt and uncle. He seems to just travel around the country with his dog, Boy, as a semi-vagrant.īut Marley's whole world is shaken to it's core when she learns that Uncle Jack is not her uncle, but her father. I was hoping that it would revive the trilogy for me, but unfortunately it was more like the second book than the first. ![]() However, because I feel compelled to always finish a series (the exception being Lauren Kate’s Fallen series, ugh), I decided that I had to read Of Neptune. ![]() The second book fell pretty flat in my opinion and I nearly gave up on the series after that. The first book in this series was really good–it was one of the first mermaid YA books I’ve read and it seemed really original and had a great plot. Emma begins to realize that she may have another choice for her future and when a Half-Breed named Reed begins to pay her extra attention, Galen is worried that Emma may decide to stay in Neptune forever. ![]() In Neptune, Syrena live in harmony with humans and Half-Breeds. Emma’s grandfather pushes them in the direction of a small town called Neptune, which turns out to be something completely unexpected. The problem is that "the lore" strictly forbids women to enter Unseen University or is it simply that the etymology of "wizard" was never meant to include women? " - Zed, " Eskarina would like to be a witch and a wizard. If it had talked more about how girls can in fact become wizards and how exactly one does become a wizard it would have been a far more interesting read, instead it was a lot of "anything you can do i can do better" hub bub that really detracted from the book. " Just as much fun as the other books, but the woman empowerment speal got old. " Definitely better than some of his other books. (Notably the ending is pretty abrupt.) " - Ratiocination, This is a book where one can feel that taking shape, even if there are still a few rough edges. The Discworld series is often compared to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- I think one of the biggest differences is that Discworld as a setting works on its own terms, whereas Hitchhiker's is more purely satire. It's the first one to go further afield, enlarging the cast and filling in some new locations. " If you feel you absolutely must read Discworld books in sequence your first time through, this is the place to start. " Ok, with this book, my 3rd foray into Discworld, I finally get the attraction of Terry Pratchett! " - Holly, ![]() " Love the ridiculousness! Monty Python meets Tolkein with a generous sprinkling of feminism. ![]() ![]() ![]() In contrast, Tides of Honour had some harrowing trench warfare scenes while Promises to Keep related the forced exile of the embattled Acadians and their trek through the wilderness of what would soon be known as New Brunswick to add to the suspense of that novel. However, loyal readers may be somewhat disappointed that Danny and Audrey are relegated to minor roles in Come from Away (in fact, they sort of reminded me of Ward and June Cleaver) This novel is more historical romance than historical fiction, possibly due to the fact that the story solely takes place on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, and even though it occurs during the war years, the war in Europe is only visited in flashbacks. Graham seized upon that story to bring the Bakers and their children back to those readers of Tides of Honour who were clamouring for their return. Legend has it that one evening a small group of strangers appeared at a local dance hall. How did he and Grace meet? Well, it was possible they met at a dance in Nova Scotia when U-boats patrolled the east coast of Canada. Who is the young blond-haired man? See the submarine in the lower right corner? That’s supposed to be U-69 (although the image is definitely not that of a German WWII-era U-boat). ![]() Graham’s hugely successful 2015 novel Tides of Honour. It’s a style that’s not necessarily easy to capture on stage – certainly when compared to the big screen – where constant scene changes would be a distraction and therefore the pacing needs to be a little slower as the action unfolds in a more measured style. ![]() If you’re a fan, you can’t put them down but if you’re not, you’ll probably have a pretty good idea you’re not, pretty quickly. ![]() The books are fairly typical of the modern-day crime thriller genre: lots of short chapters which switch from character to character and are generally paced somewhere between express Ferrari and runaway train. Peter James afficionados will be familiar with the story of ‘Looking Good Dead’, the second book in his Roy Grace detective series and the fifth to be adapted for the stage, this time by Shaun McKenna. The world premiere stage production of Peter James’ novel Looking Good Dead is currently playing at the Lyceum theatre, and we sent reviewer Amy Tingle along to check out the the Adam Woodyatt fronted mystery. ![]() |
